2007 – Channel 10 news Purana taskforce detectives have released the actual audio from a underworld murder caught on tape. Police caught the deadly audio from police bugs placed in the hitmen’s car as they gunned down drug dealer Michael Marshall during Melbourne’s underworld war. Marshall was shot dead in front of his 5 year old son in October 2003. Shocked police sat listening to the audio as the murder was committed,but couldn’t stop it as the name of the target was never discussed. Police had been watching the pair for the possibility of them committing a murder,but had assumed their plans were possibly a local armed robbery. Both,the hitman and driver,have since been charged and sentenced for the Marshall murder. Both received discounted sentences for agreeing to testify against Carl Williams and Tony Mokbel over the shooting for which they allegedly planned and paid for. Inspired by Yumi Kinoshita, ( www.yumikinoshita.com ) professor at UCSB, Terry Luna created a video piece that went beyond just video. Autosects was shown at Gallery 1434 (date unknown) as a sculptural installation. Where, in order to listen to the audio track the viewer was forced to use the attached long silver dryer tube listening device, dubbed Audiotube(TM) which pumped the bass heavy track down the corrugated tubing creating a strange echo, warbly effect as well as made the viewer/listener look incredibly stupid and foolish….a treat for creator Terry Luna. The video was also used as the centerpiece for a performance art/spoken word show arranged by colleague John Park at the MCC also at UCSB. The video played on a large screen, and Terry recited the text read in the movie, slowing down and speeding up randomly for a weird disjointed effect. Confronted by Elizabeth Folk, a Grad Student of Art and friend, she exclaimed how this performance made her want to make art again…or somthing along those lines. The music was recorded at UCSB by Kevin Kelly, as well as the spoken parts. The spoken parts were randomly taken from flipped pages of Terry’s notebook, as you can hear pages turned in the movie, upon listening to the final take, was surprised how good it sounded andvwas arranged as a final piece for the live show. the bass and guitar was also arranged, scored and performed by Terry Luna. This video got a lot of mileage, from music, text, spoken word, sculpture …
